We have been swaddling Nicholas for sleep since he was born and I believe that has tremendously helped him to sleep through the night by 3 months of age. (Yep, he is still consistently sleeping 8 or more hours per night.)
From the start when we would swaddle him he would calm and almost immediately go to sleep with a contented smile on his face. However, in the last week he has started to fight the swaddle.
A review of the Mommy Websites shows that many infants start to fight the swaddle at around 3-4 months of age and that it may be time to end it. But apparently it is ill-advised to cut it cold-turkey. It is recommended that you first release one arm for a while. Then release both arms, keeping the torso and legs swaddled. And then when they are used to that, unswaddle completely and see how it goes.
So here he is, one arm released...
We'll see how it goes. And in other news, after more than a month of on-and-off excessive drooling and gnawing on things I do believe we are on the verge of Nicholas getting his first tooth. There is a small cyst on his lower gum (common in teething), the area is swollen and red and when I press his gum with my finger I most definitely feel a tooth beneath the surface.
It has also been accompanied by periods of crying and obvious discomfort, which we are treating by letting him chew on a damp cloth, chew on my finger, using a numbing cream and giving a tiny bit of Infant Tylenol when nothing else works. Fortunately we have only had to resort to the Tylenol three times in the past week, so it isn't too terrible for him at this stage.
Hopefully the tooth will pop through quickly and with the least amount of pain possible...
